A facelift is a procedure
that gives a person's face a more youthful appearance. The technical name for
this procedure is a rhytidectomy. The actual surgery is quite simple and
involves reshaping the lower third of the face by removing excess skin, which
loosens and wrinkles due to age. To obtain the best results, facelifts are
usually done in conjunction with other procedures that address the forehead,
eyes, eyebrows, and cheeks. Contrary to popular belief, facelifts are popular
with both men and women. There are several newer types of facelift available to
the market. These new types offer non-surgical options as well as improved
There are three
main reasons that people are interested in having a facelift.
1. Loss of fat – Which leaves the face hollow and deflated in
appearance. The most common places are near the eyes, cheeks, temples and lips.
2. Environmental damage – The environment we live in, especially with
sun exposure causes the breakdown of elastin in the skin, the development of
discolouration and wrinkles around the eyes and lips.
3. Aging – Naturally, as we age the skin loses its regenerative
abilities and causes sagging in the skin under the eyes, jowls and neck.
For those with gaunt, sallow or thin faces, a natural volume
facelift is the ideal treatment for a more youthful look. These treatments use
fat cells from other parts of the body, usually the stomach area, and inject it
into their face. This acts as a volumizer. For people who have lost the fat in
the face entirely, using a fat injection is very natural. The alternative to a
fat injection is something called a liquid facelift, which involves the use of
fillers such as Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane or Sculptra. These alternatives
are typically used for smaller sections of the face and not for an entire
facial treatment. Their results, however, can last for years.
Laser Treatment And Skin Resurfacing
The effects of the environment on our skin,
including pollution and sun exposure can be treated using strong topical
treatments, dermabraisons, laser peel treatments and other laser treatments
such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). A new and interesting development in laser
treatments is the Fraxel Laser treatment, which is performed under topical anaesthetic
and involves producing thousands of tiny laser columns that shoot deep beneath
the skin. They work by removing old pigmented and damaged cells, and cause new
collagen to grow as well as tighten the skin. This laser treatment allows the
skin to heal faster and the surgery results in no long term recovery needs.
The modern facelifts offer better results in less
time. With more attention paid to the cosmetic surgery industry there have been
major developments allowing plastic surgeons to work
faster, safer and in many cases, less expensively. The incisions are smaller;
there is less swelling and far less visible scaring. With new treatments on the
horizon, the benefits of modern facelifts are going to continue to improve.
Whether choosing a
filler treatment, a laser facelift or a modern facelift, the results are only
going to continue to improve. These improvements will result in safer
procedures, more natural looking results and, ideally at a lower cost.
